What is a Structural & Maintenance Welder?

If pipefitters are the architects of the systems inside a building, Structural and Maintenance Welders are the ones who build and protect the building itself. From the massive steel beams of a skyscraper to the heavy machinery in a factory, these welders ensure that the world’s infrastructure remains strong, safe, and functional.

In short: Structural welders build the frame; Maintenance welders keep it from breaking.

Core Responsibilities

Structural Fabrication

Welding "I-beams," columns, and trusses that form the skeleton of buildings, bridges, and oil rigs.

Blueprint & Weld Symbols

Reading technical drawings to understand exactly where a weld is needed and what type of joint (Fillet, Groove, etc.) to use.

Equipment Repair

Identifying cracks or wear in industrial machinery and using specialized welding techniques to restore them to "like-new" condition.

Safety Inspection

Checking existing structures for signs of fatigue or stress and reinforcing them before they fail.

🧰 Tools and Processes

At Advanced Industrial Training, we focus on the processes that employers actually use. In this role, you will master:

SMAW (Stick Welding)

The industry standard for outdoor structural work because it works well in wind and on dirty metal.
